Hi everybody!
I have been looking for my second dog for awhile now. During a visit to see some pups a mount ago I also seen a 15 mounts old female dog. She really caught my eye since by appearance she was what I was looking for. But at that time she was not for sale so I did not really think about it.
Yesterday they called me and offer that dog for sale. Now here comes my dilemma. I will take her home for a week to see how she will get along with my other dog and cats. In this time I would like to test if I could make anything out of her (only obedience and agility). I do not wont to make a rash decision since I have been preparing for this for a long time.
In your opinion, did we loose to much time, is she to old for training? You have to know, she was an outside dog with no previous training. She is full of spirit, and comes from a long line of game breed dogs. But on my last visit she showed no aggression toward my dog (toy poodle) or my friends dog (APBT), both females.
Please help me make the right decision.
Best regards,
Maja

Well thats a question for our members with experiance. So here is mine ;-) Any semi adult will have to get a place within an allready existing group ( hurdle). When the females in that group have no problem with the intruder , and the intruder understands the low rank within the group then you are ok. But later when the semi adult has matured , you can get the leadership change - this depends on the hurdle if the exept this or not. So maybe its working now , because of the age difference ..but this can change later. When you as highest in rank within the group , spend more time with this newcomer then the rest , then the rest might think they have been placed lower in the group. The dog that gets the most attention from the highsest in rank ( you ) will also feel stronger and higher placed in a group.
I hope you understand what im trying to tell you .
all the best - john

Hey Maja, About the age for training.. It's really important to see how far she's socialised with other things in the first months.. Other dogs... other people.. other things on the street.. etc. You can train every dog at each age.. but it's very important the dog has no fear!! I think it's a good idea to try it for a week (or 2) to see how she reacts on your own dog and friends dog. You can also try to find out how she reacts at other dogs on the street and unknown people. Traffic.. kids.. etc. One thing... without (much) fear, you can also train a dog who's 15 months!! A lot of love and patience with do alot!! Greetz, Mo
