Hello members ,
I know its summer time , holidays and less time behind the computer - for me as well , but i saw the board is almost dead lately. So here is the following question i like to ask : How do you and your dogs do in hot weather - high temperatures , as we have in europe. What do you do to keep your dog away from the heat or what do you do at all in higher temperatures ?

Hi John,
Yes, it is hot lately and with kids out for summer break I imagine many are vacationing. Just this past 10 days we had out of town company. So online time has been limited.
Regarding keeping the dogs cool during heat...usually we try to train during early morning or late evening/night. But it is nice to push just a little sometimes during peak hot hours as not all trials will be at night. Some of my dogs do better then others. The one's who always have their mouth open to breathe don't do as well as the ones who naturally breathe through their nostrils. Also, I have a sprinkler system on my runs, so when it is VERY hot I turn it on and they get a nice consistant mist. I also keep a kiddie pool filled up and in the yard. So each dog when on rotation can take a little dip if they like :-)
Bye fur now, Leri

John - I was at an AKC show here in Texas this past weekend and I read an article about the World Dog Show (held in Germany?). It said that "many" dogs died at this show because of the heat.
If this is true, I am appalled and disgusted. I always thought that dealing with the heat and dogs was pretty much common sense and common knowledge among dog show people.
Can you give any more information about this?

Well I try to keep the house cool, I keep a door open with a kind of blowing air between two doors. I go walking very late that is between 20h and 23h Also playing is for late at evenings or 23h. I do get clean water for drinking every time, so I get it clean four times a day. In the morning I put the door open in the garden so the last fresh air can run through the dogs hair When dog likes water which isn't the case i would place a swimming pool for bathing or the wristling waterthing for watering the garden. I can write something down here because a wonderfull male is now here on vacation Yukon's diamond in the ruff ofa SONIC I would like to give special thanks to Carla and John who let Sonic stay for 15 days with us on vacation. Well for sleeping he normally gets a sleeping bag and a (how to say in english) a big tow (we use it when we go lying down on the beach or to dry us when we swimm) Or at day he lies down on the floor that is also fresh. Hi there, with this hot weather, no bite work, no long run, we only go for a walk early in the morning and at night and once a week, i take them to a lake for swimming. During the day, they spend their time sleeping in their shelters under the trees.
I'm waiting for the next storm (maybe this week) to take the advantage of lower temperatures to train them harder.

Hallo!
In Sweden the weather is really hot right now. I just stop train the dogs for a while. OK, I do waterapport with my Amstaffmale. I have a lake just outside my garden, I let the dogs take a bath in it every day. It´s so fun with my male, he love to swim in the lake and he´s dywing. All the time I lived with dogs I never seen something like this, he can swim around in hours if I should let him.
And Carla Sorry too say, but "dogpeople"aren´t always so bright. In Sweden at shows I heard many, many times when they call in the speakers after owner to cars who stand on the parkingplace in the heat, peolple leave their dogs in the cars! In Sweden the vet and police brake the carwindows to help the dogs, thats good. I haven´t heard about what´s happend in Dortmund. Carina

The weather here in holland is as usual , terrible. One day its too hot to walk , and the second day we get a cold ...thats how our summers and winter have been lately. But in those hot days , the curtains stays closed , the doors open ...but keeping the warmth outside. We just got a nice pool from friends , and while we lay in the pool , layla and bonita realllllllllllllyyyy wanna join us. I cant have them in , because of the hairs , but when its time to put the pool away for winter , i will let them in . We use the waterhose every day , and mom layla and daughter bonita really enjoy that fun time. Seeing them play and having losts of fun , like real working amstaffs , i remember that was the reason why i feel in love with this breed in the first place - the will to please and game.

Right now I finished a phonecall from a friend who was visiting a dogshow here in Sweden, a big international show. One Grand Danois died in the ring! Just because the heat. And in the speakers they called for a owner who placed his New Foundlanddogs in a hot car, the owner doesn´t care to go to the car, instead he continue to show he´s other dogs in the ring. The police and veterinary brake the carwindows and help the dogs...The owner will be forbidden to be member of the Swedish Kennel Club. Good! The temperature in the car was 85 degreeds C. Boilingtemperature is 100 degreeds C. Carina

I was stupid, I looked at the pictures. You give a warning I shouldn´t see that. I will go for a big "dogmeeting" at Swedish Kennel Club in september. We are four persons coming for the Daschhundclub, we will meet all the breedclubs in Sweden. I promise to do something about this, at least in our country. In this meeting I will of course find out more about Amstaffs in Norway. Now you can read about it in Sweden, but it´s the same who´s coming up in this forum, nothing new. In our local Daschhundclub, I´m the manager of shows and I visit show all around, but I promise, I love my dogs and should never do something like this "Showdogpeople".They are so very good to see how their dogs moves and looks in the ring. But they can´t see or think when their dogs feel bad. Stupid people! Carina

Hallo again! I´m back I´m so angry ! Everybody in this forum who´has the chance to talk in for example dogclubs, try to do something, it´s terrible leaving dogs in hot cars. There´s lots of terrible things happening in the "Dogworld", but this is easy to be free of. Forbid people have their dogs in the cars at the shows, at least the summer shows. In Sweden we have parkingmen we pay the parkingticket to, they can watch that people not leave dogs in the cars. In Sweden like I told they call for people in speakers when the dogs seems feeling bad, don´t wait brake the window direct and place the dogs in a special room at the shows. Or something... there´s lot of ideas instead leaving them in cars. Carina "Dogs have just one wrong - they trust the human"

Hi Everybody,
I have just come home from a week of Dog shows in Sweden (Int. Exhibition in Østersund and 4xVadstena) It has been terribly hot all the days in Vadstena and my dogs do not cope very well with the hot summer days. The sun was boiling hot, and made the dogs (and us) really slow, uninterested and boared at the shows. I keep my dogs out of the sun, have fans on their cages at the show ground, and give them plenty of cold water. At the shows one could hose the dogs down with running cold water, really important when it was ca 28-30 C in the shade. I am absolutely disguisted with the people who leave their dogs in the cars when it it this hot. At the shows, there were numerous calls after people who had left their dogs in the cars. They had to brake some dogs out, and some got a heat stroke at the shows. I hope the dog owners who does this will be banned from all future shows and prosecuted for animal abuse.
Carina: how is the AmStaffs situation in Sweden right now? I hear rumors that people are afraid/expecting there will be a bann in Sweden too?

Carina:
Thank you for that information. I really hope the consequences are severe for those that allowed their dogs to die in the heat - a really horrible way to die.
People must understand that if THEY are uncomfortable in the heat, it is even worse for their dogs. Dogs CANNOT cool themselves like we can.
