In some books Amstaffs are put together with pitbulls (I talk ukc or adba or apbt). On some sites they speak of 1 breed. To me the pitbull and the amstaff are the same breed when you talk 100 years ago. When you would ask me the question now I would say that pitbulls and Amstaffs are two breeds, slightly different , but not the same breed anymore. And what about the ukc and akc register-dogs? are they pit or Amstaff? to me it is a mix, what about that? What do you think ? Lot to think about Dakota

Hi Dakota,
Good question......almost as controversial as the dogs themselves :-)
For all intent and purposes, I refer to them as one in the same. I do however see a HUGE difference in working drives and abilities. Perhaps we just don't have any "good" working AST's here on the west coast? Or maybe it's that we don't have any AST fanciers interested in more then OB in these parts?
I think it's more important for all of us (AKC, UKC, ADBA, ABA, etc) to stick together. The more I see of the AST vs APBT the more divided we become which only hurts ALL of the dogs in the long run.

Hi Dakota and everyone,
Don't forget that AKC continued to register UKC and ADBA Pit Bulls as Staffordshire Terriers up until 1972 so we can't speak of 100 years but 31 years only...and after 1972 many dogs where dual registred, for example AKC Ch., UKC Gr. Ch. Rowdytown's Hard rock Cafe. ADBA dogs, have been bred for gameness, and not to any written standard so their look is often but not always different from AKC or UKC dogs.
